Sexual feelings are a reality of every person's everyday life. To condemn such natural feelings is hypocritical, to ignore it unscientific, to despise it unfair, and to repress it unhealthy. People need, and will always need to learn about their bodies. People need, and will always need, a safe way to obtain pleasure without (especially in this day of AIDS, Hepatitis, and rising rates of other STDs) jeopardizing their safety.
Men and women benefit from a world in which each is in control of his or her sexuality. Individuals need the fantasy that masturbation safely can permit. Lovers need to be able to offer themselves to each other, fully aware of what pleasures can be pursued and expanded, what dangers should be denied, what risks should be run. Such learning cannot take place in books or on the internet or in casual discussions with friends.
Masturbation affords its practitioners the opportunity to experiment, to play, and to learn, all without undertaking the physical or mental dangers, which can potentially exist in relationships with partners.
For young people, masturbation is infinitely preferable to sex with partners, sex that may entail consequences for which a person is not yet ready. For those more experienced, masturbation provides the outlet necessary to relieve stress, to discover the joy of orgasm, and masturbation can be a useful "middle step", as one learns to recover one's interests before turning to a partner again.
Personal gratification is a healthy activity regardless of what you might have heard or have been led to feel. Our bodies' chemistries are fickle systems that can be better understood to help with our daily functioning. Moderation in our physical activities and dietary proclivities will lead to better overall physical and emotional well being.
